Workshop – Maturing abilities to embrace the Circular Economy part 1
Circular Economy is increasingly recognized by manufacturing companies and governments alike, as a promising approach to maximize value by increasing resource productivity, minimizing resource consumption and decreasing waste. The expected benefits of circular economy implementation in Europe were recently estimated to be around €1.8 trillion annually, leading to increased competitiveness, growth and job creation. Recognizing the benefits of Circular Economy, manufacturing companies are actively and increasingly engaging in the transition from linearity to circularity. The transition from a linear to a circular economy requires a systemic change in several organizational processes and functions: from strategy and business models to product development and manufacturing; from procurement and maintenance to end-of-use and end-of-life management. Managing the entire life cycle of products and offerings becomes an important part of companies’ core business. In this workshop, we are going to 1) present a maturity-based approach that has been successfully applied by large manufacturing companies (such as Steelcase) to support an effective transition towards circular economy and 2) have a call for abstracts for other approaches and tools being applied by industry to implement circular economy. The proposed workshop is directly linked to the “LCM and its relevance for circular economy”, and also relates to “integration of LCM and product development” and “innovations and development of LCM methods and tools”.
